Blog Shoutout: Conversation Marketing

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

One thing about having an online marketing blog is you should get to point out other noteworthy blogs. Today I’d like to point out Conversation Marketing by Ian Lurie. Conversation Marketing is a blog (and a book) that “ties together all aspects of internet marketing: design, copywriting, search engines, analytics and more.”

I’ve been digging through his archives recently and came across a few gems including 38 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started In Marketing Here’s a sample:

  1. No one has a clue how to market anything. We are all winging it. It’s just that some are better at winging it than others.
  2. Corollary: Seth Godin, et al are brilliant about the high-level stuff. But on a tactical level, everyone fails, most of the time. Learn from it.
  3. Today’s hot trend vanishes like a fart in the wind… Don’t jump on every new thing. The trick, of course, is knowing what to jump on, and what to jump over.
  4. Marketing jargon is fun but distracting. There are enough synergies, monetizations, 2.0s and viruses in the world.
  5. David Ogilvy can still tell you 99% of what you need to know about marketing. Considering he’s dead, that’s pretty impressive.
  6. Have some fun, and a sense of humor. As a marketer, ridiculous things will happen to you every day. You’re going to have to roll with it.

Conversation Marketing includes very practical online marketing tools and tips like SEO 101: What’s a Title Tag?, 10 Questions to Evaluate a Social Media ‘Expert’, and Find Great Keywords & Track ‘em.

Lance Jackson of Nuedesic Media Group, shares:

Ad Positioning[O]ne important area that should not be overlooked is the placement of the ad. Google has put out a heat map study on ad placement and their performance. The colors fade from dark orange (strongest performance) to light yellow (weakest performance). All other things being equal, ads located above the fold tend to perform better than those below the fold. Ads placed near rich content and navigational aids usually do well because users are focused on those areas of a page.
